The image of Saint Helena, sculpted in 1910 by Eduardo Bautista Alentorn, stands atop the cimborio of the Cathedral of Barcelona.
The reasons for her privileged location is two-fold. On the one hand because she, mother of Emperor Constantine the Great (4th century), miraculously found the True Cross of Jesus Christ at Golgotha in Jerusalén. The Cathedral of Barcelona is dedicated to our Savior’s Cross. And on the other hand, the Girona family, who were the patrons for the main façade of the Cathedral, were devoted to Saint Helena and many members of the family bore that name.
